Media

IS MEDIA TRULY PLAYING ITS ROLE ??
“A ghost who loiters around each night in a graveyard for biscuit and a cup of tea”
“A priest sucks his fingers and gets out milk. He says some ‘devi ma’ has awarded him this capability”
“A saint who can cure your illness by uttering a few fane words”
“ A police official caught red –handed taking bribe”
Switch on your idiot box and log on to a news channel , it is in high probability that you will see one of these captions flashing on the television screen.
Why aren’t more sensitive ,sophisticated issues such as the strife between Israel and Palestine , utter oppression of Iraqis and Afghans by US military force telecast?
There is blatant imitation of West in almost every aspect of life is most conspicuous. Watch BBC or CNN, you would never get to hear such buffoonery. Why can’t our media show what is shown in west, when blatant imitation of west in almost every other aspects of life is most conspicuous?
A plausible answer to these questions is that even the “precious” media has been engulfed in the tentacles of capitalism. Very few television users know about the TRP(‘TELEVISION RATING POINTS’). This is a process to determine the popularity of a channel by counting the number of users watching the channel at a particular instant of time.
The more renowned a channel is ,the more number of advertisements it get.
Hence , in the race for fame and popularity , the Indian mass is befooled.

Post your views and opinions as you are one among those befooled !!!!!!!!!

agreed..they dont do their job at all...news channels have juss become a source of cheap entertainment and its very bugging sometimes when you want to hear news and what you end up hearing is a tiff between some actor or actress or some breakup story or some show about ghosts...at one time this was not the case..i used to love watchin NDTV at one time infact..but not anymore..infact another friend of mine wrote a blog on the state of media also..check it out if you want..

Television Rating Points - TRP is the criterion that indicates the popularity of a channel or programme and this data is very useful for the advertisers
Presently, INTAM (Indian Television Audience Measurement) is the only electronic rating agency functioning in India. INTAM uses two methodologies for calculating TRP. First is frequency monitoring, in which 'people meters' are installed in sample homes and these electronic gadgets continuously record data about the channel watched by the family members. 'People meter' is a costly equipment, which is imported from abroad. It reads the frequencies of channels, which are later, decoded into the name of the channels and the agency prepares a national data on the basis of its sample homes readings. But there is a drawback in the technique, as cable operators frequently change the frequencies of the different channels before sending signals to the homes. It may be very misleading to read a channel according to a particular frequency even if the down linking frequency is same all over India.

Second technique is more reliable and relatively new to India. In picture matching technique people meter continuously records a small portion of the picture that is being watched on that particular television set. Along with this agency also records all the channels' data in the form of small picture portion. Data collected from the sample homes is later on matched with the main data bank to interpret the channel name. And this way national rating is produced.
